ROLLA, MO. — "Not having the information you need when you need it leaves you wanting. Not knowing where to look for that information leaves you powerless. In a society where information is king, none of us can afford that," a quote attributed to American librarian, Lois Horowitz.

Simply put, information is king and in an effort to make information about Missouri's geologic resources more accessible to the public, researchers and policy makers, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources' Division of Geology and Land Survey recently published an online bibliography of Missouri Geology.

This electronic bibliography brings together the nine books that comprise The Bibliography of the Geology of Missouri, published by the Division of Geology and Land Survey and its predecessor agencies from 1945 through 1972.

"This online tool contains references to thousands of publications and articles about Missouri geology including (but not limited to geology), groundwater, industrial minerals, petroleum, coal, environmental geology, geochemistry, geophysics and related topics," said Joe Gillman, state geologist and Geology and Land Survey Division Director.  "As with any good bibliography, this online version identifies the publication title, name of the author, date of publication, pages and contains other descriptive information."

Search options for specific geologic subjects are provided. Searches may be performed based on author, county, economic geology, mining and metallurgy, mineralogy, paleontology, petrology and petrography, stratigraphy or structural geology.  Miscellaneous searches may also be performed.

This online compilation also contains some citations for literature published after 1972.  "One of our all-time favorite publications, Geologic wonders and curiosities of Missouri, authored by former Division Director Thomas R. Beveridge (second edition, revised by Jerry D. Vineyard, in 1990) is also cited in the bibliography," said Gillman.  "Gradual updates to the bibliography will be made as time permits and we welcome and encourage comments from users."  The online bibliography is found at this Web address: dnr.mo.gov/asp/dgls/bibliography/search.asp.

Many of the publications are held in the division's library (paper and digital versions) and are available for purchase from the Missouri Geology Store [missourigeologystore.com] or by visiting the publications desk located at 111 Fairgrounds Road in Rolla.
