JEFFERSON CITY, MO. -- Celebrate the fall season at the Athens Harvest Gathering event to be held Saturday, Oct. 24 at Battle of Athens State Historic Site in Athens in Clark County. Sponsored by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and the Friends of Athens, this evening of history and fun will begin at 5 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

Enjoy an autumn evening at this fun-filled family event. Take lamp-lit tours of local historic buildings where first-person interpreters will be conducting historic dramatizations. For the kids, there will be pumpkin painting, a maze adventure and a small bag of candy. The family can get a keepsake autumn photo to take home. The site's shelter house, decked out in fall decorations, will be the setting for refreshments, including hot dogs, s'mores, cookies, caramel apples, hot chocolate and cider.

Battle of Athens State Historic Site is the site of the northernmost battle fought west of the Mississippi River during the Civil War. A cannonball pierced the Thome-Benning home during the battle. The historic site also features a campground, picnic area and hiking trails plus a small lake and the Des Moines River where visitors can fish and boat. The historic site is located 10 miles north of Kahoka on Highway 81 and four miles east on Highway CC.
