Public invited to learn more about a proposed expansion to Springfield Sanitary Landfill in Greene County

JEFFERSON CITY, MO, MARCH 24, 2009 -- The Missouri Department of Natural Resources will hold a public awareness session on April 14 at 6:30 p.m. at the Willard High School Library, 515 E. Jackson in Willard. The department will explain the permitting process for landfills and the approximate timeline for ruling on the permit application.

The Springfield Sanitary Landfill has applied for a permit expansion to its existing facility in Greene County. The facility has obtained a preliminary site investigation approval to begin a geologic investigation on its north ravine to see if the site is suitable for the expansion.  The proposed site is located in the sw ¼, nw ¼, ne ¼ of section 28, township 31 n, range 22w, Greene County and is located at 3545 W. Fr 34, Willard. 

The Department is preparing a detailed site investigation work plan. Representatives from the Department's Division of Geology and Land Survey, Solid Waste Management Program, and Southwest Regional Office will be present along with representatives from the Springfield Landfill to answer questions during the informal discussion period. 

The Department reviews all applications submitted by cities, counties and private owners to ensure solid waste landfills and expansions are properly designed and constructed.  Technical factors that protect Missouri's environment are also examined.
