First Impressions – Don’t Let Them Lead You Astray
8:30 to 9:30 a.m.
Former Deputy Director for Policy for the department, Floyd Gilzow is now Vice President of Member Relations and Governmental & Environmental Affairs and Chief Operating Officer for the Missouri Association of Municipal Utilities, part of the Missouri Public Utility Alliance. The Missouri Public Utility Alliance is a not-for-profit service organization that represents municipally-owned electric, natural gas, water, wastewater and broadband utilities working together for the benefit of their customers - customers who, in effect, "own" the utilities in their community.
Back by popular request, Floyd will start us off with a reprise of his short skit presented to past Leadership Ladder participants. His point is that we should not judge people solely on first impressions, and that people may have many diverse interests and talents.
His talk will focus on how managers can learn about the talents their staff have – maybe some that are not obvious at work – and how staff can offer to use their “hidden” talents in projects at work.
Often, we recognize staff who call upon their special talents in extraordinary circumstances, but we should be using these talents more frequently. As staff are called upon to assume changing roles at work, use of their special talents can assist them during transitions in their responsibilities within the department.
