Clay and Shale
Missouri mines produce a variety of clay and shale products. Fireclay mined in east-central Missouri is used in refractory applications where resistance to high heat and corrosive environments are needed. Porters Creek clay is mined in southeastern Missouri and is known for its absorbent properties. Common clay and shale are mined in various locations for use in the brick and ornamental ceramic industries. Small amounts of shale are mined for inclusion in cement to aid the formation of clinker.
