Assistance to Soil and Water Conservation Districts
Every state has some form of a soil and water conservation district (SWCD) although they may have a different name. In Missouri, an SWCD is defined by state statute. In Chapter 278.070(4) RSMo, a Soil and Water Conservation District is "a county or one or more of its townships wherein a project for saving the soil and water has been established with the authority and duty and subject to the restrictions herein set forth." The districts are organized in accordance with provisions set forth in chapter 278.100(1).
An SWCD can be described as a locally organized and locally operated unit of government functioning under Missouri law. They provide financial incentives and technical assistance to agricultural landowners as well as educate their communities through field days, tours, and programs in schools. SWCD's provide the local leadership to ensure conservation practices are completed in their districts.
